He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God. ~ Psalm 50:23
READING: Psalm 50
Every day in our church planting ministry we hope that God will, in some tangible way, show up to touch a life, provide encouragement or answer a prayer request. Psalm 50 makes clear that the way we prepare for God’s presence or intervention is by giving an offering of thanksgiving. Verses 14 and 15 restate this reality, “Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
Again, offering up thanks to God prepares for His active hand in my life and ministry. Acknowledging God in the good and beautiful, the everyday joys of life and health, the high purpose in ministry and service, and, yes, even the challenges – all can be offerings of thanksgiving. A thanks offering is high praise to our great God.
The act of giving thanks to God recognizes His sovereignty, Lordship, creation, provision, love and care. It bows the knee to God Most High and shifts the focus away from my efforts, pride and wants. Truly it prepares the way – sets the table – for God to continue His blessing ways in my life and in His church.
When we start our day by giving thanks, it becomes an act of faith as we bless God for His provision for the day, and for the ministry ahead.
Lord, Today, all day, as I eat, think of my family, walk, work and meet with people, I will do it as a thank offering, one that I lift up to You with joy. I ask that my sacrifice of thanksgiving be pleasing in Your sight. Amen.
