Learning to Trust When I Don’t Understand

April 10, 2014 by DCPI Devotions

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. ~ Proverbs 3:5

READING: Hebrews 11

When assessing a potential church planter, we always look for someone who “walks by faith” and not by sight. When a new church planter ventures out by faith, there is so much that is not seen, understood or predictable. Yet, learning to trust the Lord when the path is not plainly visible is an essential quality of a church planter.

There have been MANY times when I have stood on the back porch of my house during my quiet time and I have cried, shouted, and wept, “God, I don’t understand.” He has replied, “Just trust me.” I have responded, “But I don’t . . .” His firm reply, “Just trust me.” He doesn’t always explain everything, and He does not owe me an explanation.

As a church planter, when key leaders have left the church, offering receipts were down, plans have gone awry, doctors reports were not good, or when my wife was killed in an auto accident leaving me with three children in college and one in high school, I cried, “I don’t understand!” He said, “TRUST ME!!”

One older pastor reminded me, “Don’t doubt in the darkness what you knew to be true in the light.” Over the years He has proven that He is trustworthy, even when I don’t understand.

Lord Jesus, I choose to trust you even when I don’t understand. Today, I have a lot of unanswered questions, but I trust you, the omniscient One who sees the BIG PICTURE. Thank you for being my patient loving Heavenly Father who protects me even when I don’t understand. Amen.
