Arrogance can always be found within self-deprecation as well as self-exultation. In both cases, Jesus’ view and value of me is not enough. I am disappointed in myself because I should do better, or, on the other hand, I credit myself rather than Jesus. Pride is a tricky thing.
There is great temptation to over-serve, over-give, and over-work when planting a church. In us resides a reservoir of complex and mixed motives and rationale. Rather than simply trusting God, we may look for spiritual and generous ways that attempt to control God and put others in our debt.
Jesus, Save me from both my goodness and my badness. Make me like Jesus who only did what he saw his Father doing. Give me wisdom and faith to give well. Amen.
